November 29, 2024 – Dust Girl by Sarah Zettel
. Dust Bowl Kansas might not be the first setting that comes to mind when thinking of fairy stories but in Sarah Zettel’s capable hands, it totally works.
DUST GIRL is Book One of Zettel’s “American Fairy Trilogy,” first published in 2012. I was drawn to the book because it’s grounded in a realistic historical America setting (1930’s Kansas), while weaving in elements of fantasy (dueling fairy courts eager to claim the heroine). Realistic historical fiction with fantasy elements in an American setting is the niche where I write, so I’m always looking for related titles and was particularly delighted to find this one.
I love how Zettel tells a fast paced, action packed YA adventure story, while seamlessly integrating real world issues of racism, poverty and institutionalized brutality. This is a book that can speak to young readers as well as the young at heart. Highly recommend.
