The Never Heir by Courtney Millecam

The Never Heir Review Image

“The Never Heir” is the first in “The Otherworlds” series, which I recently devoured. The action starts out in the realistic world of 1923 London, where people are still suffering the effects of the brutal “Great War,” now called “WWI.” The world and characters of Peter Pan provide the fairy/fantasy elements in this first book of the series, though presented in an entirely fresh way. Seeds are also planted in “The Never Heir” for the brilliant and seamless additional mash up Alice in Wonderland and the Wizard of Oz introduced in the next two books.

Each book also features a romantic plot that balance perfectly with the existential stakes drama taking place between the human and fantasy realms. In “The Never Heir,” we follow Evie, a British aristocrat whose mother can’t get her married off soon enough, and Charlie, a former Never Boy from Peter Pan’s Neverland trying to make his way through life as a shop assistant and part-time boxer.

💖 I particularly love the blend of realistic historical fiction with the fantasy element of the neighboring fairy realm. “The Never Heir” is a must-read for fans of Sarah Maas and the classics of children’s fantasy literature. Highly recommend. 💖
